Black tea
Even though green tea has been cherished for hundreds of years in Japan, black tea also has its place in Japanese culture. Wakoucha is a Japanese black tea, made of dark, fully oxidized tea leaves. Because of the special cultivar of Japanese tea bushes, wakoucha has a naturally lighter, sweeter, less bitter taste than black teas from Sri Lanka or other regions, where black tea mostly originates from.
