Kukicha are the tea stems and stalks separated from the leaves during the green tea processing. Roasted kukicha can be a great evening companion, as the stems are usually lower in caffeine than the leaves and the tea loses most of its caffeine during the roasting process. Master Uejima-san’s hoji-kukicha is made from second year sencha stalks and lightly fried. When brewed at home, this tea has a sweet roasted nutty aroma with pleasant tobacco notes. And the perfectly balanced light roasted hazelnut flavour creates a pleasant evening mood.

About the Master

I heard about Uejima-san teas through stories. I couldn’t leave the town of Wazuka in the Uji region without tasting the teas of one of the town’s most respected masters. Uejima-san is a fifth-generation farmer well-known in the tea world and his tea is valued and found in luxury hotels. Uejima-san is the only winner with the maximum number of points in the Kyoto Tea Tasting Competition. It is a great honour to collaborate with this master and to have his teas in the Yugen Tea collection.

I really enjoy Osada-san’s kukicha tea, and this one is my autumn discovery. It has the typical sweetness and lightness of kukicha, but is also rich in a nutty, roasted flavor. A perfect choice for cozy autumn and winter evenings.
