Hoji-genmaicha is a composition of roasted tea and toasted rice, creating a rich and aromatic harmony of flavours. Traditionally, green tea is blended with toasted genmai rice, which brings notes of nutty, sunflower and caramel flavours. In our composition, the traditional green tea is replaced by hojicha green tea roasted at high temperatures by farmer Akky-san. Hoji-genmaicha is lower in caffeine and has sweet hints of caramel, chocolate and nutty flavours.

Hoji-genmaicha is a unique Japanese tea that combines roasted hojicha tea and roasted genmai rice. This rare composition is inspired by Genmaicha tea, which is traditionally made from unroasted green tea. The aromatic rice perfectly complements the flavour of the tea, making it popular not only in Japan, but also worldwide.

Production process

To extract the intense flavour and reduce the caffeine content, hojicha is made from second-picked green tea leaves and stems, which are roasted at high temperatures. Genmai is unpolished Japanese brown rice which is steamed and roasted to give it a special crispness and aroma.

The process of making hojicha-genmaicha starts with the roasting of the hojicha tea leaves, during which they lose some of the green tea qualities and take on nutty and caramel flavour notes. Toasted genmai rice is added to the tea, creating a unique harmony of flavours. This composition has a rich aroma and a mild, warming character.

Health benefits

Hoji-genmaicha has less caffeine than traditional green tea, making it ideal for both day and evening drinking. Its warming effect is particularly appreciated during the cold season and in summer it can be prepared as a cold drink to give a refreshing feeling.

Usage

Hoji-genmaicha goes well with both Japanese dishes and sweets. This tea can be enjoyed on its own or after a hearty dinner. The delicate flavours of toasted rice and caramel give the tea a versatility that makes it a favourite all over the world. Genmai rice can also be mixed with other teas. It adds a special flavour to salads, soups, can be sprinkled on sandwiches or even eaten alone as a healthy Japanese snack. More information can be found here.

Cultural aspects

Japanese hojicha tea is considered a symbol of hospitality. It is traditionally prepared in a domestic setting and is a frequent accompaniment to tea ceremonies. Hoji-genmaicha combines this tradition with an innovative fusion of flavours, highlighting the Japanese culture’s love of harmony between nature and simplicity. How to choose the right utensils for making tea.

Tea quality: The quality of the tea leaves is not only determined by the final result of the artisan, but also by the storage conditions of the suppliers and yourself. Green Japanese tea is particularly sensitive to the environment, therefore, the recommended consumption time of this tea is quite short. To extend the expiration date, an unopened green tea package can be stored in a refrigerator. After opening the package, it is recommended to store the tea in a sun-proof package or airtight container in a cool place, as far away from moisture and odours as possible.

Water quality: Water makes up 99% of the contents of our cup of tea, so its quality is just as important as the tea itself. The most suitable water for the tea is soft and as close as possible to neutral pH, with a low mineral content (50-100 mg/l). Usually, tap water in Lithuania is heavy, therefore, for best possible results, you should choose filtered or spring water. During boiling, water loses oxygen, thus it is recommended to never boil the same water more than once.
