This handmade matcha bowl (matchawan) was created drawing upon the deep tradition and mastery of Japanese ceramics. Ceramicist Beatričė has been consistently cultivating this knowledge for over two decades. Since 2003, she has studied and explored traditional ceramics and kiln technologies in Japan – in cities renowned for the oldest ceramic schools: Tanba, Shigaraki, Echizen, Tokoname, Seto, Tajimi, Kutani, Hagi, Mino, and Bizen. She later developed her craft in other countries – Guatemala, Korea, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico, bringing broad global experience into her work.
The bowl’s creation preserves the subtlety and functionality of Japanese aesthetics. The soft brown color, natural surface tones, and harmonious form give it warmth and elegance. This is a bowl that will rest comfortably in your hands and allow you to enjoy the matcha ceremony as the masters themselves understand it.
Ceramicist Beatričė has been actively creating for over twenty years. In 2008, she established a ceramics studio in Misato, Japan, while also living in Lithuania, where she explored local ceramic traditions. In 2010, she was granted Art Creator status. The artisan’s works have been recognized in prestigious Japanese competitions – including wins at Toki 2014 and Tanabe 2013, a personal Kyoto Governor’s Prize (2014), and a special award at the international Mino 2014 ceramics competition.
In 2014, in the Vilnius district, in the Dūkštos area, Beatričė established the Anagama Ceramic Art Center and built a 5-meter-long high-temperature kiln, Karmazinų Anagama. In 2024, a second one, Dūkštos Anagama. Although this matchawan was not created using the anagama method, the artisan’s experience in high-temperature wood-fired ceramics shapes the distinctive character, aesthetics, and quality of her work.
This is not just a bowl, but a unique testament to mastery and tradition – created by someone deeply familiar with Japanese tea culture and the art of ceramics.
